Matera is the City of Sassi, districts formed by cave constructions built in the natural quarries of Murgia Materana and inhabited since Palaeolithic Era. There are two main districts: Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, which, together with Civita, constitute the historical center of Matera. An immense cultural heritage, full of history, where there are traces of the different civilizations that inhabited and lived in this city remained intact over time, preserving important historical testimonies. Matera, known both as "City of Sassi" and as "Underground City", represents one of the most ancient inhabited cities in the world. It is the guardian of unique landscapes that can be admired only in Lucanian county seat, where, in addition to the Sassi, there are rock churches, underground cisterns and Palombare, sculpted portals and frigates that hide the underground heart, as well as noble palaces and the famous Cathedral, examples of bio-architectures still well preserved. For their beauty and exclusivity, on December 9th, 1993, Sassi were recognized World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in the Assembly of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), becoming the first site of southern Italy to receive this recognition.

A few days ago, on January 19th, 2019, the extensive programming of Matera's events that will take place throughout this year, such as the Workshop of Tailoring, Music and Words Concert, Signs of Wood, the Musical dedicated to Don Pino Puglisi, and many other unmissable initiatives, was inaugurated.
