Matera is the City of Sassi, districts formed by cave constructions built in the natural quarries of Murgia Materana and inhabited since Palaeolithic Era. There are two main districts: Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, which, together with Civita, constitute the historical center of Matera. An immense cultural heritage, full of history, where there are traces of the different civilizations that inhabited and lived in this city remained intact over time, preserving important historical testimonies. Matera, known both as "City of Sassi" and as "Underground City", represents one of the most ancient inhabited cities in the world. For their beauty and exclusivity, on December 9th, 1993, Sassi were recognized World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in the Assembly of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), becoming the first site of southern Italy to receive this recognition.
